What is the difference between A/B and split url test?

Split URL testing is similar to A/B testing, the only difference in Visual Website Optimizer between the two is that in A/B testing variations of the page are created using our visual designer. This does not require you to know HTML, or create different pages yourself, you can use our Visual Designer for creating variations. However, for Split URL testing, as the name says, you have to create and host different versions yourself on different URLs. See following image for an idea:
